business tips starting an online business virtual assistant resources
Besides the all-reliable referral or word-of-mouth method of booking new clients, Content Marketing can be an incredibly effective way to attract your ideal clients to hire you as a Virtual Assistant.

Whether it’s a blog (like the one you are reading now), video, email newsletter, or other social media content, when creativity is combined with the technical aspects behind the content platform, you just may find yourself with so many leads you have to start turning them away!

Now, you do need to know that content marketing is a long-term game.

You will need a good strategy that involves consistent content creation and distribution to attract and retain your ideal audience.

REMEMBER: unlike ads, each piece of content that you create will live online forever. You want to create content that your audience is going to love and get fascinated by.

If you succeed in doing that you will reap endless benefits like:

  • Getting more traffic
  • Attracting the audience’s attention longer
  • Building a perception of being useful and valuable instead of coming across as “salesy”
  • Influencing the perception of your brand
  • Building a positive brand image and trust in your expertise
  • Building a connection and engaging with your audience.

So avoid wasting time on sub-standard quality content.

Investing time and money into excellent content marketing will ensure you have a sturdy backbone for a successful virtual assistant business.

Considerations Before You Begin A Content Marketing Strategy:

Time

Create content without the additional costs of paying for it but keep in mind it takes a lot of time and effort to build and nurture an audience.

There is no instant content marketing success.

Money

You can opt to outsource content marketing and pay for it if you have the budget.

Content marketing success doesn’t come cheap.

Audience

Knowing your audience is the very first step. Without it, content marketing is like screaming into the void.

Create content that speaks directly to your ideal audience, distribute in places they hang out, and talk about topics they would be interested in.

Goals

Goals are your light beacons. They will impact your entire content strategy. Goals are the “why” and the “what” of content marketing.

Your content and distribution channels will depend on your goals.

KEEP IN MIND: goals can evolve as your business grows.

Content Creation

When you choose content marketing, you will need to create a ton of content.

Be careful not to make it only about your services and offers.

Your content should tell your stories.

Why do you do what you do?

How did you get where you are now?

How did you help your clients succeed?

Give it a human touch. Make it fun.

It will engage the audience and make your brand memorable.

Don’t forget, all this will consume time. Time to ideate, execute and distribute.

Using the right messaging in your content will help you make the most of your efforts.

Other things to consider are the graphic design, and audio aspects if you use video or podcasting.

Content Pillars

The ton of content that you will need to create can be broadly classified into these 3 types of content pillars:

Educational Content - Teach your potential clients about how VAs can help grow their business, give back time, etc.

Inspirational Content - Inspire your audience. This may be as extravagant as showing them what their lifestyle could be with a VA or as simple as posting an encouraging quote.

Sales Content - This is the content that contains your offers, any promotions you are running, or info about how to book a discovery call.

Each type of content can be created through various mediums such as videos, infographics, photos, blog posts, podcasts, or even print!

Content Marketing Strategies

You can go digital or print - many strategies fall underneath these two wide strategies that are quite extensive and I’m not going into detail in this blog post.

Make sure you come back and check out the post where I will cover my Top 3 content marketing strategies for Virtual Assistants!

Something important to keep in mind as you think about various strategies is that you would be wise to create a strategy, plan what content you create, and share it on your chosen platforms to all add up to a goal.

Here’s an Example:

Trying to book 5 new clients under a certain package?

  • Create content that coordinates with that goal and drives your offering home.
  • Try and hit a mix of words and visuals that educate, inspire, and sell clients on the packages that will get them the transformation in their business or life that they are looking for.
  • Use words that would pique the interest of your Ideal Client.
  • Create visuals, whether still or video, that entice them to look further into what you offer.

By the way, if you haven’t created an Ideal Client avatar for your VA business yet, you can get my free worksheet “21 Questions To Get To Know Your Ideal Client”.

Now, creating the content strategically is one thing, but one could write a whole book about how to make sure that content is seen across the various platforms and channels where you share that content. And not only seen but seen by those Ideal Clients that you are targeting!

Some people would recommend trying to use a wide approach with content marketing and others will tell you “the riches are in the niches”.

If you don’t have an audience on any online platforms yet, that is ok. You can still become a successful VA and book your first clients by making sure you set up a good business foundation and don’t completely write off meeting business owners in your local area or speaking with people you already know - content marketing, however, can save you a lot of advertising dollars in the long run and keep those Ideal Clients attracted to you.

So start as soon as you can to build the future of your business as a Virtual Assistant!

Oh, and one last thing, don’t forget that creating content for your business can be FUN!
